Travel to St John USVI

To St John via St Thomas Airport

Since St. John doesn't have an airport, our island remains small and quiet. St. John visitors fly into St. Thomas' Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on major airlines including Delta, American, United, Spirit Air, JetBlue, and US Airways. Many major cities offer direct air access to St. Thomas, such as Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Atlanta, Miami, and Ft. Lauderdale. Also, with Puerto Rico just a twenty minute flight away, direct flights from this popular Caribbean hub offer even more flight opportunities.

From St. Thomas Airport to St. Thomas Red Hook Ferry

Getting to the Red Hook Ferry is very easy. You have 2 choices.

If you want to avoid waiting for taxis to fill up, shared transportation and multiple stops, you can pre-arrange a private St Thomas airport transportation pickup through CaribbaConnect. Your driver will receive you at the Arrivals section of the airport and after you have collected your luggage will transport you directly to the Red Hook Ferry dock.

A ride from the airport (STT) to the Red Hook ferry terminal normally takes 25-40 minutes depending on traffic.

Alternately, if you have more time and don't mind the shared transportation and multiple stops, you can take a shared taxi at the St. Thomas Airport. That service normally runs $15 per person plus baggage fees.

From Red Hook Ferry Dock to Cruz Bay Ferry Dock

The Red Hook ferry to Cruz Bay St John leaves every hour on the hour from 6:00 a.m. until midnight during high season and takes about 20 minutes. The cost of the ferry is currently $7 per person, plus $4 per large bag (small purses and backpacks that remain with you are free). Purchase tickets inside the Ferry terminal at the St. John Ferry desk. View the Cruz Bay ferry schedule here.

From Cruz Bay St. John Ferry Dock to the Resort

Just let us know your airline arrival information prior to your departure from home, and our complimentary shuttle will meet you at the Cruz Bay Ferry Dock and take you on the five minute ride to the Resort.

St John Rental Cars and Other Transportation

Once you are on St John, you have numerous transportation options. Taxis can take you anywhere you want to go, and there is also regular public bus transportation between the Cruz Bay Ferry Dock and Coral Bay.

The best way to experience the pristine beaches of the National Park and other sites on St. John is by car or Jeep rental for at least part of your stay. We recommend making rental reservations in advance, since car rental agencies on island get booked up during the busy winter season. Due to the popularity of sightseeing around the island, we also recommend your renting a car on St John (rather than St. Thomas), so that if you have any problems the rental agency is nearby to assist you. The concierge team at Gallows Point Gift & Gourmet are happy to book a rental car at no additional cost. Just remember, we drive on the left-hand side of the road in the Virgin Islands!

No passports are needed for US Citizens to enter the US Virgin Islands. However, you will need your passport if you plan to visit the British Virgin Islands, even if just for a day trip (which is highly recommended!)

Language and Currency

The official and most widely spoken language in the Virgin Islands is English. US Dollars are used in both the US and British Virgin Islands. There are two ATM machines in Cruz Bay, and one at The Marketplace, just a short distance from the Resort.

Please note that the Virgin Islands does not participate in Daylight Savings Time. Thus, between March and November, the Virgin Islands has the same time as Eastern Daylight Time, and between November and March, the Virgin Islands is one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time.

Cell phones and Internet

ATT and Sprint are the main cell phone carriers and generally honor rates and calling plans just like calling from state to state. Other cell phone providers most likely work, but will incur roaming charges. Internet access is offered in the lobby and WiFi access is available across the property. There are also numerous Internet cafes located in Cruz Bay.
